 what can be done to help women in Africa?
It's been calculated that African women and children spend up to 40 billion hours every year collecting water. So when water is supplied to a village it should mean that a significant burden has been lifted from their lives. However this isn't always the case, and development experts are now lobbying for greater awareness of their needs.
As the UN launches its international decade for action on water, with a special focus on women, what is being done to ensure that when pipes are put in, women are not left high and dry.
