We look at Hagar, Abraham and Sarah's slave and the mother of Ishmael. She is a figure who has been reclaimed by so called "womanist " theologians - which has been described as a fusion of black and feminist thinking.
Kathleen Griffin spoke to Tina Beattie, a lecturer in Christian studies at the university of Surrey and Dr Lavinia Byrne of the Cambridge theological foundation.
