Social
European Home Prison 3 August 2008
The first prison in Europe designed specially for mothers with children

ICAM is based in Milan, it is set up to function like a normal house. Mothers share communal responsibilities like cooking, cleaning and child care. The children, who are all under four, are allowed to leave each day to go to nursey school. Meanwhile the detained mothers get a chance to learn different skills to enable them to get jobs when they leave prison. The scheme has been so successful, it’s now been recognized as a model for other European countries. Germany, Spain and Portugual have shown an interest in adopting similar homes. Candida Beveridge went to Milan to visit the home.
