Reversing female circumcision 27 Mar 2009
The first UK clinic to offer operations to reverse female genital mutilation under general anaesthetic in a GP’s surgery.

It is estimated that 500 British girls suffer female genital mutilation [FGM] every year. Next month, in a bid to undermine the demand in this country for girls as young as 5 years old to be circumcised, midwife Juliet Albert will be advertising operations that reverse FGM on a Somali satellite TV station popular with the Somali community in Britain. Juliet works at the Acton African Well Woman’s Centre in West London, the first community based clinic of its kind to offer FGM reversal operations under a local anaesthetic in a GP’s surgery. Juliet Albert joins Sheila McClennon to talk about her work and why she’s advertising on Somalian television.
