For most of us jewellery is seen as pure decoration; but it can also be about wealth, status and power. The Heneage or Armada Jewel, for instance, is a symbol of all these attributes. It was given by Queen Elizabeth 1 to her Privy Councilor and Vice Chamberlain of the Royal Household, Sir Thomas Heneage after the defeat of the Armada in 1588. This Heneage Jewel with the golden miniature of Elizabeth I on the front is one of the prize exhibits of the V&A’s new Jewellery Gallery. Corinne Julius was shown the exquisite locket by the Gallery’s consultant curator Beatriz Chadour Sampson.V&A Jewellery Galleries V&A The Heneage JewelDisclaimer
