Helping mothers who are unable to relate to their children

As violence and unrest continue in the Somali capital Mogadishu in fresh clashes between Islamists and Ethiopian troops backing the interim government, many thousands of people have fled to a refugee camp in eastern Ethiopia, near Jijiga. Dr Lynne Jones has been working there as a child psychiatrist for the US-based International Medical Corps. She’s been helping mothers who have been so traumatised by rape and the loss of their husbands that they are unable to relate to their young children. As a result the babies don't thrive, but Lynne's programme involves trained workers talking to the women when they collect their food rations, and setting up mother and baby groups.
