The charity New Bridge estimates that about 75% of young offenders up to the age of 21 are parents, often to more than one child and often with multiple partners. There are currently 11,787 under 21s in jail in the UK.
Since 1992, New Bridge has been offering a parenting education course in prisons called Family Matters. The course is designed specifically for prisoners and tackles issues related to being a parent while being incarcerated. Many of the young men New Bridge works with have been excluded from school for much of their lives and have had very little sex education. Family Matters covers issues such as teenage pregnancy, contraception, abortion and the rights of fathers to be involved in their children's lives.
