How has the position of women in Islam been used to persuade the Swiss people to vote in favour of a ban on the construction of minarets?
A referendum held in Switzerland on Sunday, 29th November means that the words "the construction of minarets is forbidden" will be added to article 72 of the Swiss constitution. This was a campaign initiated and fought by the populist Swiss People’s Party (SVP) and central to its campaign was the issue of women’s rights in Islam. How has the position of women in Islam been used to persuade the Swiss people to vote in favour of a ban on the construction of minarets? Imogen Foulkes, BBC’s reporter in Switzerland joins Jenni to discuss the issues.
