Are we too selfish to have children? 18 Nov 2009
State of the World Population Report 2009

Earlier this month the Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks of Aldgate, caused a storm when he said the birthrate in Europe was in decline because its secular population was " too selfish to have children ". Later today, the UN Population Fund publishes its State of the World Population Report 2009. With world population rapidly increasing and predicted to reach 9bn by 2050, does Europe really need more people?  Jenni discusses the issues with journalist, Melanie McDonagh; Lynda Clarke, Head of the Centre for Population Studies Unit at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and Dr Pip Hayes, GP and a member of the Optimum Population Trust.
