Gender Testing 25th August 2009
Is it all in the genes?

South African athlete Caster Semenya was ordered to submit to a gender test by the International Association of Athletics Federations after the newcomer clocked the best result this year in a women’s 800m race. It’s been reported she was examined by an endocrinologist, a gynaecologist, an internal medicine expert, an expert on gender and a psychologist. But what were they all looking for? And what is a gender test? Dr Simona Giordano is a Senior Lecturer in Bioethics at the University of Manchester. She joins Jane to discuss the issues raised by Caster Semenya’s case.
