Dorset Women’s Refuge 12 August 2009
Closing because it doesn't accommodate men?

Dorset housing services are withdrawing funding from a women’s refuge to re-direct money into a community outreach scheme to combat domestic violence. One reason given for the move is that the refuge doesn’t accommodate men. So what is a community outreach scheme, and how does it help victims of domestic violence? How can councils best use limited resources to meet the needs of everybody in their care, regardless of gender? And is this an example of taking the Government’s Gender Equality Duties too far? Jenni discusses the issues with local councillors Ros Kayes and Andrew Cataway, and the Deputy Director of Women’s Aid Nicki Norman.
