Organising the Family 05 Jun 2009
Can technology sort out the chaos of family life?

For many parents, the daily dashing about to accommodate their offspring’s activities has not only turned them into glorified minicab drivers but has forced them to organise their family life with a precision hitherto only seen in the military. For generations, a calendar on the kitchen wall has been the organisational hub of the household but now the digital age is upon us and pen and paper planning is being challenged by a new range of electronic gizmos. Woman’s Hour has asked journalist [and mother of four] Angela Epstein to road test one of the latest electronic family organisers. She joins Jenni in the studio to talk about how she’s getting on with device and they discuss with Dr Dale Southerton – Senior Lecturer in sociology at Manchester University – the advantages and disadvantages of organising the 21st century family using digital technology.
