Telling the Truth 04 May 2009
Should families try to be more truthful with each other?

Our families may think they know us better than anyone else – but it can often be harder to share what you really think with them, than with friends or complete strangers. So why are there so many obstacles to being candid with relatives – and what happens if you decide you’re prepared to be honest and that you also want to hear the truth about other people’s feelings? Nigel Warburton, Senior lecturer at the Open University and Sophie Hannah, award-winning poet and novelist join Sheila to discuss whether it's discretion, rather than honesty which keeps families speaking to each other?
