Media coverage of women’s sport – "woefully absent” or just not interesting enough?
On 22nd March England’s Women’s Cricket Team won the Women’s ICC World Cup, yet media coverage of this was minimal, especially compared to the coverage of a normal weekend’s football and rugby results. According to a report by the Women’s Sport & Fitness Foundation, in 2008 just 2% of articles and 1% of images in the sports pages of national newspapers were devoted to female athletes and women’s sport. The situation is nearly as dire on television with coverage usually restricted to unusual hours on subscription channels. So why is this and what is being done to redress the balance? Jane is joined by Andy Burnham, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and by Dominic Lawson, Columnist for the Independent and former editor of The Sunday Telegraph.Women in Sport AuditDisclaimer
