Cohabitation Bill 13 Mar 2009
Lord Lester’s Private Member’s Bill gets its second reading in The Lords.

One in six couples in the UK co-habit - a figure that is predicted to rise to one in four by 2031. More than half of those who cohabit falsely believe in the existence of Common Law marriage but the truth is, that if you separate from someone to whom you are not married, you do not have the same legal rights as someone who gets divorced. This is why Lord Lester has introduced the Cohabitation Bill. It gets its second reading in the Lords today and it will clarify and expand the rights of cohabiting couples. He joins Jenni to talk about his private member’s bill and explain why he thinks such legislation is long overdue.
