Taliban militants in northern Pakistan 20 January 2009
What does their increasing power mean for the women of this region?

Thousands of young women in Swat Valley, Pakistan, are being prevented from going to school by the Taliban. Fearful of violent attacks that have already seen the torching of schools in the valley, administrators have announced that hundreds of private schools will remain closed until the security situation improves. The country’s celebrated dancing girls are also fleeing in fear of their lives, as Taliban militants increase their strength in the North-West Frontier Province. Jane asks BBC reporter Barbara Plett about the Taliban’s latest actions and their impact on women.
