Stretch 28 Nov 2008
An interactive sound sculpture made with knicker elastic

What could you achieve with six miles of knicker elastic? The mind boggles, but sculptor Sophia Clist has used it to create a bizarre interactive sound sculpture called Stretch. It’s engineered out of hundreds of strands of elastic and also doubles up as a stage for performance.  Every time the elastic moves it creates different sounds. She’s already shown it in Canada, Germany and London, and it has been showing in Newcastle as part of ‘Juice’, the city’s festival for young people. Caz Graham joined Sophia and a group of school children making themselves heard on this strange kinetic sculpture.
