Recently published figures claim that the UK has one of the worst safety records for fertility treatment in Europe.
Articles in the press at the weekend claim that fertility treatment in the UK is ‘the least safe in Europe'. These claims are based on the latest figures from the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology, ESHRE, which suggest that women undergoing IVF in the UK are at greater risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, OHSS, than in any other country in Europe, apart from Russia. OHSS – which causes the ovaries to enlarge and the sufferer to experience nausea and pain in the abdomen - has been responsible for deaths in this country but, according to the Director of Manchester Fertility Services – Professor Brian Lieberman – the figures reveal another worrying trend in UK fertility safety. He joins Jenni to interpret the latest ESHRE data.BBC Infertility webpages European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology UK Fertility ReportDisclaimer
