Work
Women Firearms Officers 04 Jan 2008
An armed police officer
Recruiting women to one of the most dangerous police departments

Across the Metropolitan Police, 21% of the officers are women, but in the firearms unit female officers constitute just 3%. It's hoped a new scheme to attract women will adress that. The ‘Women’s Development Programme’ gives women the opportunity to try out some of the skills they would need as a firearms officer. But what draws a woman to want to work in one of the most dangerous departments in the police force? Henrietta Harrison went along to the training centre in Gravesend, Kent.
