A musical spectacular in a dramatic setting
It’s a reinvention of Handel’s Messiah, an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular, with stilt walkers, steel drummers and extravagant costumes. Carnival Messiah brings Caribbean carnival to Handel’s eighteenth century Oratorio. This month it’s being restaged at the historic Harewood House near Leeds, a rather surprising setting, considering it was built on the profits of the slave trade. Trinidadian-born composer Geraldine Connor has drawn much of the cast from the local community and they’ve been rehearsing at Harewood since July. Reporter Clare Jenkins has been along to listen in.
Carnival Messiah is at Harewood from 14-30th September 2007Carnival Messiah at Harewood HouseDisclaimer
