Elderly Drivers 31 Jul 2007
What happens when older drivers are no longer safe to drive?

The safety of driving as one gets older is a hot topic - especially in the United States. There, poor access to public transport and isolation from amenities, families and friends, means that a car can often be the only way to get around. But accidents do happen. When Katherine Freund’s son was almost killed by an elderly driver, she was determined to do something about it. She came up with the idea of the Independent Transportation Network, a unique service that encourages older drivers to trade in their cars for rides. It’s now operating in a number of American cities, including Orlando in Florida.

Reporter Jennifer Chevalier went to see the scheme in action.
