Transparency in the Family Courts 20th June 2007
The consultation on improving transparency in family courts was published in March. What happens now?

The Family Courts in England and Wales hear over 400,000 cases every year, usually behind closed doors. Last year the government drew up proposals for greater transparency in the courts, and these went out for consultation. The responses were published in March, and today the government is announcing its plans. So how will the balance be struck between the perceived need for transparency and the need to protect those individuals - particularly children - who are caught up in the proceedings?

Jenni hears from Lord Falconer, the Secretary of State for Justice, and discusses the issues with Khatun Sapnara, family barrister at Coram Chambers and Camilla Cavendish of The Times.
