70th Anniversary of The Mass Observation Project 08 May
Mass Observation project logo
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Mass Observation project which set out to record the experiences of everyday life in Britain. Thousands of ordinary people submitted diaries, filled out questionnaires and field workers even noted down conversations they overheard. The project ended in the early 1950s and the material generated is kept at Sussex University. Jenni is joined by Dorothy Sheridan, director of the Mass Observation Archive, and Mandy Rose, co-founder of the BBC’s Video Nation to discuss what this information tells us about women’s lives in the 1930s and 40 and how new technology has changed the way we gather the experiences of ordinary people.
