The Delights of Rhododendrons 10 May 2007
Glenarn

Depending on your point of view a rhododendron is a delight or a menace. The plant is witness to the enthusiasm of 19th century collectors who brought it to Britain. With its beautiful flower heads it remains popular, but it’s also invasive and has been blamed for reducing the number of indigenous plant species in the UK. Some National Parks such as Snowdonia have even initiated a rhododendron cull to keep the numbers in check. So are they alien invaders taking over the landscape, or an exotic delight?
Sue Thornley owner of “Glenarn” in Rhu, Argyll and Keith Jones, Countryside Manager for Llŷn and West Snowdonia NT join Jenni to discuss.
