And continuing today's Woman's Hour celebration of the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth and death, we reach the next in our series on Shakespeare’s best supporting female roles. These are the women who are, or have been, the mistresses and girlfriends. They play a vital part in the plot. but have little stage time to put over complicated emotions and intricate ‘back stories’. Judi Herman has been looking at some of these roles with women who have performed them, and with Pippa Guard, lecturer in Drama and English at the University of Greenwich.
