Dressmaking: a dying art? 15 Mar 2007
'New Clothes That Count
Is it time to revive it?
There’s been a lot of talk about the lost art of cooking, with the demise of domestic science lessons in school. But what people never seem to mourn is the lost art of dressmaking. Every girl of a certain generation was on speaking terms with a treadle Singer, and could run up a gingham pinny or a blouse with darts. But with shop bought clothes so cheap, and free time at a premium, the number of women who can make their own clothes is dwindling.

Jenni is joined by dressmaker, Alison Smith, who runs the Alison Victoria School of Sewing and writer Eithne Farry, author of "Yeah! I Made It Myself" to discuss whether it is time to revive the lost art.

Yeah, I Made It Myself: DIY Fashion For The Not Very Domestic Goddess by Eithne Farry is published byWeidenfeld & Nicholson ISBN 0297 851179
