Dame Elizabeth Maconchy 05 Mar 2007
As far as British twentieth century composers go, you may well be familiar with the work of Britten and Tippett, but you are less likely to know Maconchy’s music. This year marks the centenary of the birth of Dame Elizabeth Maconchy, who composed an impressive body of music. Her daughter, Nicola Lefanu, is also a composer and Professor of Music at the University of York. Henrietta Otley talked to her about her mother’s work, and also to the pianist Diana Ambache, who is performing Elizabeth Maconchy’s Concerto for Piano and Strings with the Ambache Chamber Orchestra at St John’s Smith Square, in London this Wednesday.
