Female Gurkhas 7 Dec  2006
Gurkhas
Women to join one of the Army’s most famous brigades.
The Gurkha’s, one of the most famous Army brigades in the world, have won 26 Victoria Crosses for bravery – and now look set to admit women for the first time. A review panel looking into the way the brigade works has recommended that women be able to join. Already hundreds of Nepalese women have shown an interest in signing up. But what will their role be in a brigade famed for its fighting skills?

Miriam O'Reilly is joined in the studio by Dr Lucy Noakes, Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth and author of ‘Women in the British Army' and Tony Gould author of ‘Imperial Warriors; Britain and the Gurkhas’.
