Rape Law Change 07 Nov 2006
Last week a court heard allegations that a female student was raped by the president of her hall of residence during her first week at Nottingham University. The 18-year-old woman claimed that she was drunk at the time and was not able to give the man proper consent to have sex. The accused man was later cleared. This case comes at a time when there is growing press speculation about a possible change in the rape laws. It has been suggested that the law should be amended to make it easier to convict men of rape if they have had sex with a woman while she is drunk. At present, women are deemed to be capable of consenting to sex as long as they are not so drunk that they are unconscious.
