Women smokers 26 Oct 2006
The Forsyth Saga
The sexual promise of the cigarette.

There was a time when no woman, from Princess Margaret to Hilda Ogden, would be seen without one. The cigarette for many women not only served to enhance the appearance, but with merely a flick of the wrist or a casual blow of smoke, it could instantly convey the sort of woman you aspired to be.

Jenni is joined by Penny Tinkler, author of ‘Smoke Signals’, and ex-smoker, Shelley Rohde, to discuss the female love affair with smoking. To what extent does it smoulder on?

Smoke Signals: Women, Smoking and Visual Culture by Penny Tinkler is published by Berg ISBN: 1-84520-267-8
