Women and South Africa 09 Aug 2006
50 years ago today, 20,000 women, some of whom were carrying their children or the children of their white employers on their backs, marched peacefully through Pretoria to the Union buildings, home of the Parliament, to protest against the pass laws which required them to carry an identity card. It was this march and the momentum it unleashed that really put women at the heart of the struggle against apartheid.

For many women in South Africa the years of struggle were also years of waiting - waiting for their men who had been taken away. Angela Robson has been finding out a bit more about their lives, but first we hear Nelson Mandela speaking on the day of his release in 1990, after 26 years in jail.
