The first year of marriage gives couples a blissful glow, which fades suddenly in the second year as reality sets in and the rose-tinted spectacles come off. That’s the bleak message from a new report by a pair of Swiss economists, tracing 15,000 German couples from 1984 to 2000.
But all is not lost – the survey finds that while happiness levels of married people never regain that initial high, married people are generally happier than individuals who remain single. So how does happiness change over the timescale of a relationship?
