A third of India’s MPs to be women

The Indian Parliament has passed a Bill which will set aside a third of seats for women, at every level of India’s legislature – from the regions to the nation. At the moment only ten percent of India’s MPs are female. The numbers are even less at regional level. Campaigners for the change hope it will put issues of female education and healthcare at the top of the list of priorities. It still has to be ratified before it becomes law, but that is seen as a much easier process. So is this a turning point for India’s women? Jenni is joined by Veena Nayyar of the Women’s Political Watch, who has campaigned for many years for the Bill and by Sanjoy Majumder, the BBC’s Correspondent in New Dehli.
