The Children Who Fought Hitler 3 Nov 2009
Children playing in the war cemeteries in Ypres between the wars'courtesy of John Gabriel
The memorial school in Ypres

By the time World War One ended, more than 250,000 British soldiers lay dead on the battlefields around the Belgian town of Ypres. The necessity to bury, or rebury them with dignity in designated cemeteries was a priority and a band of ex-servicemen were sent back to the area to build and tend the new war graves. Some took their wives, some married Belgian women and soon a community built up, including a British school for the children. To discuss the school and what happened to its pupils when World War Two started, Jane is joined by Lillian Betts who attended the school and by Sue Elliott, author of ‘The Children who fought Hitler’.

'The Children who Fought Hitler', will be broadcast on BBC 4 at 9.00 on Sunday November 8th as part of the Remembrance season on BBC4

'The Children who fought Hitler' by Sue Elliott with James Fox is published by John Murray ISBN 978-1-84854-086-6
