Work
Age discrimination win 22 Apr 2009
Linda Sturdy

Linda Sturdy had worked at Leeds Teaching Hospital for 17 years when she was passed over for a job running breast screening services. She was 56, and was told by one of the interview panel that he didn’t realise she was “so old” when she mentioned she would reach state retirement age in 2010. The new job was given to a younger, less experienced candidate. Then, the tribunal found that hospital managers tried to force her to take a lesser role and her grievances were not dealt with properly or promptly.
Linda has just been awarded £39,000 damages, which includes the biggest ever payout for injury to feelings in a discrimination case in the UK. Jenni talks to Linda about her victory and discusses its wider implications with Michelle Mitchell from Age Concern.
