Music
Ukuleles 25 Mar 2009
Ukeleles by Ian Ransley
Why the instrument has become cool

In the UK the Ukulele is managing to buck the trend for downward sales. Music shops have reported that sales are booming – in some cases up 300 % from what they were a year ago. The trend is being linked to the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain’s rendition of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit which has had more than half a million hits on YouTube. Anna McNamee has been meeting some of those who have recently taken up the instrument. In Brighton she met the Ukuladies – a band formed of 5 women and their Ukuleles.
