A new parliamentary bill may reform the murder laws for women.
The government has put a new bill to Parliament which, if approved, will see the biggest reform to murder laws in 50 years. Feminist campaigners have long called for an effective defence to be made available to women who murder their partners after prolonged and violent abuse. They have also been calling for the defence of 'provocation' to be tightened up or removed entirely so that men who kill their wives in the heat of the moment are not treated leniently. This is what the new bill proposes. So is this a move in the right direction or a step too far? Jenni talks to Harriet Wistrich, a solicitor and a founding member of Justice for Women, about the implications the new bill will have for women in abusive relationships.Ministry of Justice Government Equalities OfficeDisclaimer
