Finding freedom in the face of adversity
It has been almost six years since the invasion of Iraq. For women living there the war and following occupation signalled enormous change. Nadje Al-Ali is a feminist activist and the Director of Gender Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Her latest book ‘What Kind of Liberation?’ is an in-depth examination of the position of women in Iraq today. Despite claims by some that the fall of Saddam’s regime would result in greater female freedom, the reality is far from it. Yet many Iraqi women refuse to become victims. Nadje Al-Ali joins Jenni to explore the pivotal roles women are playing in the formation of a new, non-violent nation.
