When the economic crisis means you can’t afford to part
This first week of the year is the time when feuding couples are most likely to start divorce proceedings. A record number of separating spouses are expected as the rising unemployment rate and the crumbling housing market puts relationships under greater strain. Relate says calls to its national helpline are up 59% compared to last year. But for many of those seeking divorce or separation the economic crisis is actually forcing them to stay together. Jane hears from Sarah who still lives with her ex husband despite their divorce last year. She also discusses the issues with Paula Hall from Relate and the lawyer David Allison from Resolution, an organisation representing 5,000 family lawyers.
