Work
New work requirements for lone parents 20 November 2008
Parent and child
Should they be obliged to look for work?

In a bid to halve child poverty by 2010 the government is to introduce new rules for lone parents on income support. Currently those parents are under no obligation to look for work until their youngest child is 16. But from 24 November the criteria is changing and parents with a youngest child of 12 or over who apply for benefit will be moved on to Jobseeker's Allowance and forced to look for work or risk benefit sanction.  Critics have argued that these changes could increase hardship and be detrimental to family life. Jenni discusses the issues with Fiona Weir, Chief Executive of One Parent Families/Gingerbread, and Kitty Ussher, MP and Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Department of Work and Pensions.
