Giving birth after 42 weeks gestation
Standard practice in this country has been for medics to induce labour if gestation goes beyond 41 weeks. At the moment, around 20% of babies delivered on the NHS are born this way. But is this figure too high? Independent midwives tend to avoid inducing labour unless it’s absolutely necessary and so only 2-3% of babies delivered independently are induced. So should we be more prepared to just let nature take its course?
