Work
Women in Mathematics 31 Oct 2008
While girls outperform boys in Maths GCSE and A Level, very few go on to study the subject to degree level or to develop a career in mathematics. And when they do, women may find that they receive fewer grants and less opportunities to develop as their male colleagues might. And with no evidence showing a difference between male and female ability in maths, why has the maths equivalent of the nobel prize’ The Fields Medal, never been won by a woman? We look at whether there’s a gender imbalance in the world of mathematics and ask what can be done to improve the achievements of women in mathematics.
