The story of the world’s first sex therapist

Dr James Graham has been described as the world’s first ever sex therapist, and was a huge celebrity of his time. He scandalised 18th century society with fertility cures which included electric beds and cold water washing of the genitals. He also lectured on both sexual reproduction and women’s rights. Jane is joined by Lydia Syson, author of a new book on his life. She discusses Dr Graham’s celebrity patients, including the Duchess of Devonshire, as well as the famous Celestial Bed – an electric, magnetic, musical fertility device.

' Doctor of Love: James Graham and his Celestial Bed', by Lydia Syson, is published by Alma Books, ISBN: 978-1846880544
