Severe malnutrition in children
After a disastrous maize harvest in 2005, almost five million of Malawi's 13 million people needed emergency food aid. But this year, a nation that has perennially extended a begging bowl to the world has instead been feeding its hungry neighbors. However, despite the grain surplus, many of the county’s population are still going hungry. Recently the Forum for Food Security in Southern Africa reported that malnutrition rates among Malawian children were 'alarming', with fifty per cent having stunted growth.
