Pipers 13 August 2008

Why more women are taking up the bagpipes

Increasing numbers of women are now choosing to play the pipes and are climbing to the top of the field. In Glasgow the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama is offering a full time piping degree and the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland is nurturing a new generation of piping women. This week several leading female pipers are competing at Piping Live, Glasgow’s International Piping Festival and performing at its first ever women’s event - Girls and Gracenotes. Anna Bailey caught up with them along with Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell.
