Maternity Services 15 July 2008
Towards Better Births

A recent report by the Healthcare Commission into maternity services in England found shortfalls in some NHS trusts –shortage of midwives, poor continuity of care as well as divisions between midwives and obstetricians e.g. poor teamwork. Twenty-eight percent of doctors surveyed and fifty eight percent of midwives did not have shared goals. Sir Ian Kennedy, Chair of the Commission joins Jane to discuss the report and these ‘tribal allegiances’ that set obstetricians against midwives. They are joined by Maggie Blott, Consultant Obstetrician at University College Hospital London and Louise Silverton, Deputy General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives.
