Children’s Book Guide 1 February 2008
Books and reading for the under sevens

Picture books, novelty books, board books, lift-the flaps or the classics – the range of literature available for young children is immense. Now a new book is being published to guide parents through the wonderful world of children’s publications. So what makes a great book, and what do both adults and children gain from early exposure to books? Wendy Cooling, a winner of the Eleanor Farjeon prize for services to children’s literature, and Leonie Flynn, who is a school librarian and one of the compilers of the new guide, talk to Jane about books and reading for the under sevens.

The Ultimate First Book Guide , edited by Leonie Flynn, Daniel Hahn and Susan Reuben , is published by A and C Black on Feb 4th 2008. ISBN 978-0-7136-7331
