Pauline Viardot
The Maria Callas of her day?

Pauline Viardot was the Maria Callas of her day. Leading composers wrote especially for her, including Brahms, Berlioz and Saint-Saens. She performed throughout Europe in the nineteenth century and counted Georges Sand and Turgenev among her friends. She was also a composer herself.
Michael Steen author of a new biography of Pauline Viardot ‘Enchantress of Nations’ joins Jenni to examine her importance and legacy.

‘Enchantress of Nations, Pauline Viardot: Soprano, Muse and Lover’ by Michael Steen. Icon Books ISBN 978-184046843-4
