Work
Migrant Care Workers 20 Nov 2007
What will happen to care home residents when their carers lose their work permits?

The government has said that it will no longer renew work permits for senior care workers. They have decided that their work was insufficiently skilled to warrant a permit. UNISON estimates that this will affect up to 11,000 migrant care workers, mostly women, working in the UK. The Home Office says that work permit arrangements must strike a balance between allowing employers to recruit skilled people, while protecting employment opportunities for British workers. But with a shortage of people willing to work in caring for the elderly, could these changes unsettle the lives of vulnerable care home residents?
