History
Henrietta Barnett 5th Oct 2007
In October 1907 the first cottages of the sparkling new Hampstead Garden Suburb were completed. The suburb was the brainchild of the social reformer Dame Henrietta Barnett, whose vision was to bring together people of all ages and all social classes. Working with the architects Raymond Unwin and Edwin Lutyens, she planned houses for both rich and poor and places where the community could come together, such as a church and club-house.

But how successful was the venture and what does it tell us about the character of Henrietta Barnett? Ritula is joined by Henrietta Barnett's biographer Alison Creedon and June Armstrong-Wright, who has written and directed a play about her life.

“About the Dame” is being performed at the Henrietta Barnett School on October 6th and 7th
"Only a Woman: Henrietta Barnett, Social Reformer and Founder of Hampstead Garden Suburb" by Alison Creedon, published by Phillimore and Co.Ltd ISBN 1-86077 - 430 - X
